The NSBE Alumni Extension (NSBE-AE) was established in 1988. Before the establishment of local chapters could occur, first a regional body had to be formed. Through the efforts of several dedicated Black engineers, NSBE-AE Region II was quickly formed. The formation of Region II led the way for the chartering of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Alumni Extension (NSBE-AEDC).

Established in 1989 and officially charted in 1990, the objectives of NSBE-AEDC have and continue to be the advancement of ethnic minority engineers in professional industry; promoting as well as retaining the number of students currently pursing engineering degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level; stimulating and developing student interest in science and engineering; as well as supporting NSBE and its local DC Metropolitan student chapters.

With members representing Washington, DC, Suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia, NSBE-AEDC actively pursues the goals of the national organization. This is done via the chapter's projects and programs that are implemented and executed throughout the year. Such projects/programs include Professional Development Seminars, Technical and College Roundtable Discussions, Community Service, High School Mentoring, SAT and College Preparatory Workshops, as well as Scholarships.

NSBE-AEDC's success in fulfilling the mission of NSBE is reflected in its status as the 2000, 2001, and 2009 NSBE Alumni Chapter of the Year. NSBE-AEDC is recognized as NSBE's largest alumni chapter, and as NSBE-AEDC continues to grow, so will its impact on the community at large. The chapter will continue to pursue endeavors dedicated to fulfilling the mission of the national organization.
